NordicTrack X16 Incline Treadmill Review

Overview

The NordicTrack X16 and its big brother, the X24, are the two newest incline treadmills in the company’s lineup, replacing the previous X22i and X32i that were available for a number of years. It looks like NordicTrack is doing away with the “Incline Trainer” moniker, instead simply calling them “Incline Treadmills”. We’re not quite sure why they made this switch.

At any rate, the X16 and X24 are very similar…the main difference is the size of the pivoting touch screen display. The X16 has a 16″ screen and the X24, yes you’ve guessed it, has a 24″ touch screen. Otherwise, the two new incline treadmills offer essentially the same features and capabilities.

The biggest draw of the incline treadmills is the industry leading 40% incline capability and 6% decline capability. This is something you simply don’t find anywhere else so if you want to do some serious training for a marathon or long hike, these are the treadmills you want to go with.

Let’s get into our NordicTrack X16 review to see what this new treadmill is all about…

NordicTrack X16 - Best Features

Incline/Decline Capability

As we mentioned above, the NordicTrack X16 as well as the NordicTrack X24 both come with unrivaled incline and decline capability. You’ll find treadmills with incline training but it typically maxes out at 15%. You’ll also find some decline, but usually up to half as much as these treadmills offer.

Incline and decline training helps you replicate an outdoor run, targeting muscle groups you can’t hit on a flat surface. We like to crank it up to 40% and see how long we can run for. It’s incredible cardio training.

Touch Screen With Streaming Capability

All of the new NordicTrack treadmills come with pivoting/tilting touch screens, and the X16 has one as well. You can adjust it to the perfect angle, which not only helps when you’re on the machine but also for off machine training like stretching, yoga and the other exercise programs that iFIT offers (see below)

Also new is the fact that you can now stream your favorite shows, movies and videos while you work out. This was not possible before so it’s a great added feature that makes these treadmills even more appealing.

iFIT Workout Technology

The best part about the NordicTrack X16 and the rest of the company’s treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and rowers if of course iFIT.

This ever-evolving, immersive program gives you access to over 10,000 trainer led workout programs across all fitness levels, automatically adjusts your speed, incline and decline so you can work out hands free, gets you into your ideal heart rate zone and now has an AI personal trainer feature.

iFIT used to be free for a period of time so you can try it out and see. Now unfortunately you have to pay for it right away…but they do offer discounts from time to time and it’s well worth the monthly/yearly fee.

Advanced Cushioning

SpringFlex cushioning is the newest technology that NordicTrack offers. It reduces impact on the knees and back so you’re able to train longer.

We’ve tested out many treadmills without great cushioning and it really makes a difference. Usually about 20-30 minutes into our training we start to notice a little pain starting to develop. And then after the workout it’s very noticeable.

Paying a little more for better cushioning is always a good idea.

Other Great Features

Along with incline and decline capability, tilting/pivoting touch screen, iFIT workout programs and advanced cushioning, you get a powerful 4.25 CHP motor, speed up to 12 mph, large 22″ x 60″ running surface, Bluetooth/WiFi capability, two water bottle holders, up to 400 lb. maximum user weight capacity and an AutoBreeze workout fan.

NordicTrack X16 - Pros and Cons

Pros

There are tons of pros when it comes to the X16 incline treadmill as you read about above. You get unmatched incline and decline, there’s plenty of space to walk, jog or run, the cushioning is solid, endless IFIT workouts, large touch screen that pivots and tilts.

You won’t find all of these special features together in one treadmill. It just doesn’t exist, which is why NordicTrack has essentially owned the home treadmill market since we started reviewing them over 15 years ago.

Each new treadmill is an improvement upon the last. The new X16 and X24 have streaming capability, lifetime motor warranties, higher 400 lb. max user weight capacities, tilting touch screens and the most advanced cushioning the company has.

This makes them the best treadmills the company has ever offered, and the iFIT program gives you much more now than it has in the past.

Cons

There aren’t too many cons when it comes to the NordicTrack X16 incline treadmill. It is on the pricier side at about $2,699 on sale. (about $300 cheaper than the X24) As such, it may be out of range for some buyers.

Also, NordicTrack no longer gives you a trial period for iFIT, as we mentioned above. At one point it was a full year, then a few months, then one month…now it’s simply a paid service…you can choose one, two or three years.

At only $39 a month roughly it’s a fraction of the cost of a gym, but still it would be nice if people can try it out and decide if it’s something that they would be interested in subscribing to.

Summary

Overall, the new NordicTrack X16 is an excellent choice for your home gym. Although it is costly, you get tons of features and capabilities for the price.

If you want to save a bit, look at the Commercial Series as well. (1250, 1750, 2450). These treadmills give you most of the same features, you just get less incline/decline capability which is fine for most people.

There’s also an entry level T Series that you might want to consider.
