What Should You Look For in a High-End Treadmill?
Once you get into the higher end of the treadmill market, spending more doesn't necessarily mean you're just getting a bigger motor or a larger running surface. Most treadmills at this level already have more than enough of both for the average user.
What you're really paying for is a better overall machine. That might mean heavier construction, a smoother and quieter ride, better cushioning, more advanced technology or simply a treadmill that's designed to hold up for many years of regular use.
We've been reviewing treadmills for a long time, and one thing we've learned is that "high-end" can mean very different things depending on the brand.
NordicTrack tends to put more emphasis on technology and the workout experience, while companies like Matrix and Life Fitness have traditionally focused more on the machine itself.
That's why our three picks below are pretty different from one another. They're all high-end treadmills, but there are very different reasons why you might choose one over the others.
Which High-End Treadmill Should You Choose?
The NordicTrack Commercial 2450 is the one we'd choose if you're looking for the most technology and the most immersive workout experience. The large touchscreen and iFIT integration are a big part of the appeal, especially if you like trainer-led workouts and having the treadmill automatically adjust speed and incline/decline during your workout.
It's also the most mainstream of our three picks and probably the easiest transition if you're moving up from a more traditional home treadmill. You're getting a lot of premium features without getting into the prices you can easily reach with some of the higher-end fitness brands.
The Matrix TF50 is a very different machine. Matrix is part of Johnson Health Tech, which also makes the commercial Matrix equipment you've probably seen in health clubs. That experience shows in the TF50. It's a substantial treadmill with a very solid feel, and you have several different console options depending on how much technology you actually want.
You also now get iFIT like you'll find on the NordicTrack and ProForm treadmills.
We'd lean toward the Matrix if the quality of the treadmill itself is more important to you than having the latest workout platform. It's expensive, but this is the type of machine we'd expect someone to buy with the intention of keeping it for a very long time.
Then there's the Life Fitness F3, which comes from one of the most established names in commercial fitness equipment. We've used Life Fitness treadmills in gyms for years, and there's a certain smoothness and familiarity to their machines that you don't always get from a typical home treadmill.
The F3 gives you that Life Fitness quality in a folding design and at a price that's much more manageable than some of the company's $7,000+ treadmills. It doesn't overwhelm you with features, and that's really part of the appeal. You're paying more for the construction, engineering and reputation behind the machine rather than a giant screen or a long list of extras.
So which one would we buy?
If technology, interactive workouts and entertainment are at the top of your list, we'd go with the NordicTrack 2450. If we were looking for the most substantial, premium-feeling treadmill of the three, we'd lean toward the Matrix TF50. And if we wanted a straightforward, high-quality folding treadmill from a company with decades of experience building health-club equipment, the Life Fitness F3 would be our choice.
At this price level, there really shouldn't be a lot of compromises. The better question isn't which of these is the "best" treadmill. It's which one gives you the things you're actually willing to spend more money for.
