Cybex is a dinosaur in the fitness industry, with a strong reputation when it comes to building and delivering quality fitness equipment for consumer use and commercial use. The company was created in the late 60's, in Ronkonkoma, NY. Initially people knew them under a different name, "The Cybex Ergometer Company". A few years later, Lumex bought the company and changed its name to Cybex in 1995.

They started to make treadmills in 1997, when Cybex International merged with Trotter, Inc. Next they expanded to bikes and steppers with the acquisition of Tectrix.

Their latest (and most known product) is the Arc Trainer. They also produce and sell cross trainers, strength equipment, and rehabilitation equipment for commercial use. Click here for the full products list.

We've known for a few years that the mission of Cybex Research Institute is to create products that are compatible with the human body 100%. That is why Cybex Treadmills have always attracted us. We know their price is prohibitive, and it is difficult to find the budget to invest in one of their treadmills for your home gym. Even so, we believe that if it were not for their price, any choice from the Cybex catalog would make the perfect solution for a complete workout.

Strengths

Durability: If you buy a Cybex treadmill, you spend the money because you want to be 100% sure you receive a durable treadmill that lasts for years. Based on the feedback received from owners of Cybex treadmills, when used properly, these machines last for minimum 5 years without requiring any particular maintenance work. Even if you put them through 5-6 hours of intensive running daily, these machines will last.

Intelligent Suspension Systems: Cybex has a patented solution for treadmill's cushioning, also known as the  IS3 technology. This system guarantees that  the treadmill's biomechanics aligns correctly with the runner's stride, ensuring a comfortable and injury free running session.

Motor: Cybex has the strongest treadmill motors we've had the chance to test (maximum option is 6 HP). This is more than enough to keep up with all the workouts options included in the console, but also with any customized workout you desire to test.

Preset Workouts: What you must know is that each workout included in any of the Cybex treadmills consoles is designed at their institute by Cybex Master Trainers. Once added to the console, the workouts control the treadmill's settings automatically according to the personal information you add at the beginning of the exercise. The number of workouts included in each model depends on the purpose of the treadmill, and the price you can pay. They have a preset workouts package for military fitness tests, which only top treadmill brands offer.

Weaknesses

Price: Personally, we believe Cybex treadmills are a little overpriced. We can assume that producing treadmills in US costs more than outsourcing the production stage to China, like other brands do. Even so, they are one of the most expensive brands and the price makes their treadmills prohibitive for home use.

Entertainment options: Do not buy the Entertainment Monitors just to connect to Nike+, so you can save your workouts info. It is a too high cost for the value received. If you enjoy watching TV while working out, having a TV in front of you is more than enough. Cybex must continue to improve the interactive features delivered with their consoles. Their competitors already offer more attractive alternatives at better prices.
