For some time now our readers have asked us s a simple question: Which is best, Mobia or a Bowflex Treadclimber?

This is because the features Mobia has resemble to the Bowflex Treadclimber features a lot. And it’s normal this happens taken the fact that Mobia and Bowflex are developed manufactured and marketed by the same company, Nautilus Inc.

As a parenthesis, Nautilus Inc. owns many brands, not just Mobia and Bowflex. They own also PEARL iZUMi, Schwinn Fitness, StairMaster, Trimline and Universal brands. The company was created in 1986 and since then they have dedicated their activity to creating and selling fitness equipment. At this moment they represent a strong name in the fitness equipment market.

This article is based on our experience so far and it’s about a comparison between Mobia vs Treadclimber vs Incliner, more specific between Mobia vs Bowflex TC 5500 Treadclimber vs NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer Treadmill.

All the details this review includes are based on our personal experience with each of the 3 machines we tested, their training purpose and most important their price!

Nautilius Mobia

Resembling Features Between Mobia, Treadclimber TC 5500 and NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer:

1. Incline:
All tree machines use the Incline feature as the main tool to work your muscles really hard during exercise.

Mobia, Bowflex Treadclimber and Incline Trainer have the same purpose: burn calories fast. They just propose 2 different ways to do it (Mobia and Treadclimber rely on their combination between treadmill and stair climber while Incline Trainer relies on its treadmill’s features and high incline).

2. Dimensions:

Belt Dimensions of the NordicTrack Incline Trainer X7i are: Width 22” (55.88 cm) x Length 55” (139.7 cm).

Technical Dimensions of 5500 TC Bowflex are: Length 55” (139.7 cm), Width 31.5” (80 cm), Height 55.25” (140.3 cm), assembled weight 218 lbs (98.9 kg)

Technical dimensions of Mobia are: : Length 52” (132 cm), Width 28” (71 cm), Height 51” (130.3 cm), assembled weight 200 lbs. (90.7 kg)

As you can see, the differences are very small. For tall people, these small differences matter. For the others, they don’t count. Bowflex has larger dimensions than Mobia, but they are insignificant from our point of view. The most important dimension is the length which, as you can see, it’s almost the same on all 3 machines.

Bowflex Treadclimber TC5500

Resembling Features Between Mobia Nautilus and Treadclimber TC 5500:

1. Speed:

Both Mobia and Bowflex have the a maximum speed level at around 4mph ( 7km/h)

2. Supported User Weight: 0-300 lbs (0-136 kg)

Both machines have the same limitations for the User Weight.

3. Workout Setting Cylinders:

Both machines use the same workout setting cylinders that you have to set manually before each workout. If you want to change the steps resistance during the exercise you must stop, get off the machine, change both cylinders settings, get back on the machine and start the workout.

4. Service/Set-up Mode on Mobia is the same with Configuration mode on Bowflex.

Different Features Between Mobia, Treadclimber TC 5500 and NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer:

1. Supported User Weight:

While Mobia and Bowflex TC 5500 have only 300lbs maximum supported user weight, NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer can support as much as 350lbs.

2. Warranty:

Bowflex has a slightly improved warranty than Mobia but is still too little for the price paid. You get 5 year motor warranty, 3 years for parts and electronics, 2 years for the hydraulics for Bowflex TC 5500. For Mobia you receive 2 years for the motor, 2 years for the parts, 2 years for electronics and 2 years for the Hydraulics.

For the NordicTrack X7i Incliner you get a Lifetime Frame Warranty, a Lifetime Motor Warranty and 1-Year Parts & Labor warranty.

3. Workouts:

All three machines have manual and custom workouts included (but in the limitation of each machine’s speed and incline).

This means that with Mobia you can choose the Quick Start workout (predefined values) or the custom workout (based on your own height and age). This machine has the simplest workout options of all 3.

Bowflex 5500 comes with additional workouts than Mobia which allow you to have a more interactive training: you can set goals based on your age and weight, receive tropheis when you reach them and get to more challeling workouts based on your success (we refer to the 9 Landmarks workouts).

But the most interesting of all is NordicTrack Incliner with the iFit LIVE Module included in its price. The iFit LIVE module gives you a personal trainer, Jillian Michaels. In just a few words, with iFit LIVE you have an automatic incline change during live terrain simulator workouts. And you can enable new workouts everytime the module is connected through the Internet with the iFit website. Jillian is side by side with you to offer advice and valuable workout tips. The disadvantage is that when you lose the connection to the Internet you can’t use the Module either and the technical specs involved in using the module may require you to call a technician more often than the other 2 options. Still, NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer has the most various workouts of all 3 training machines.

NordicTrack X7 Incline Trainer

4. Design:

When it comes to design, each machine has its personal look. To select the best looking option depends on each person’s taste.

Mobia has a futuristic look and fits perfectly in a home with modern architecture and design. Some say Mobia has a look that attracts mostly women. And we can confirm it’s true, at least between us and our friends.

The men in our group preferred Bowflex instead of Mobia.

NordicTrack Incliner has the classic look of a treadmill. The colors match with Bowflex TC 5500, even the frame which is made of steel. From all 3, NordicTrack sumed the less points at design in comparison with the other 2 options.

5. Price:
This is a very important point.

Mobia costs $1,700.

Bowflex TC 5500 TreadClimber costs $3,300.

NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer (with iFit LIVE included) costs $2,000.

Different Features Between Mobia Nautilus and Treadclimber TC 5500:

1. You have no leveler on Bowflex but you have one on Mobia.

2. Bowflex has the new and more challenging GO console with the unlock reward and 9 landmarks features.

3. Bowflex allows to use the treadclimber as a treadmill by locking the 2 treadlers, while Mobia doesn’t do that. Still, treadmill mode is useful only for warm-ups and cool-down (it's totally impractical for running)

Conclusions:

From out point of view, the differences between Mobia and Bowflex TC 5500 don’t reflect in the $1,300 price difference between them.

NordicTrack Incliner has the features of a treadmill (so you can use it to run too!) and a high incline option. The high incline feature is the one that makes it comparable with Mobia and Bowflex. If you set the treadmill at 4 mph speed and 40% incline you have a similar workout feeling. But, if you want to change the incline and speed without getting of the machine, you have all controls available at just one push away. Not to mention the iFit LIVE module which makes it really worthy you look into this option.

The warranty is not something we rely on to make this comparison as we haven’t experienced on our own what it means to need to contact the Support Representative and ask assistance for any of the machines analized in this review. We hope our readers can help us establish which is the best option when it comes to Support and technical assistance, plus reliability and resistance over years of intensive use.

As a last remark we would like to mention we prefer the NordicTrack X7i Incline Trainer most of all.

But it would be unfair to name our preference the ‘best machine’ of all. This award depends entirely on the personal needs of each person. So you can tell us which is best for you and why.

Our recommendation is to go with the option that makes you feel you bought a machine that represents you, resists many years and helps you reach your goals.

This is not a treadmill review but a product review that has the features of a treadmill and a little more. This is Nautilus – Mobia review.

Mobia is a combination between an elliptical and a treadmill built for home use with the main purpose of helping people to lose weight (and stay in shape).

The special details about this machine are that Mobia has 2 treadles which allows you to:

    * walk like on a treadmill
* step up like a stair climber
* combine the 2 actions

Pretty cool, no?

We got interest in doing this review for several reasons. First because it’s marketed as the machine that can allow you to burn twice the calories number a treadmill can. Second because its design is futuristic and no other company offers it. And last but not the least; this is a Nautilus product, a brand with high reputation in launching qualitative and innovative products

This is a $$1,700 machine (with the latest offer). Is it worth spending this money? Should it be on your To Buy list if you’re looking for a home training machine? Why not buy a treadmill as this machine would limit you to walking exercises only?

See our review and maybe we can help you find some of the answers you’re looking for.

    * Motor current (for technical reference)
* Coast time (for technical reference)

6. Remote Heart Monitor (Heart Rate Chest Transmitter included):

The Console displays your Heart Rate in Beats Per Minute (BPM).

See also the Nautilus T516 review for details about how to clean and use the Chest Trap.

We also recommend reading the Nautilus T514 review for more information about the heart rate readings and the use of the information received through this system. For more info read this review.

7. Workout Setting Cylinders:

Mobia uses Hydraulic Resistance Cylinders to absorb the pressure of your steps and plus to reduce joint pains. The intensity of the workout is adjusted through the Workout Intensity Settings.

These controls are located at the top of the Hydraulic Cylinders. Use the dials to line up with setting the white arrow from your machine. Set both Cylinders at the same value.

Some may meet with the following situation: “Bottoming out” which occurs when the Treadles go through a great range of motion and they hit against the base on the down step. To reduce treadle travel, decrease the Workout Intensity Setting or increase belt speed.

8. Walking Belt Adjustment

Adjustments are made on the Front Roller of each Treadle.

Check the alignment of the treadmills by setting speed to 1.5 MPH. If the 2 treadles are not aligned when in motion use the right tool to align them. For technical reference use your User Manual or call for technical Support at Mobia.

Nautilus T516 Special Features

  1. 2 Blue Backlit LCD Display

How to interpret some of the data listed on the LCD display:

Program Display: shows the name of the program you selected. The dot-matrix area shows the course profile for the program. Each column in the profile is an interval (an interval represents 1/12 of the total program time). The flashing column is the current interval.

Total Time: time counted during the workout. Maximum time counted (during a manual workout) is 99:59 minutes.

Distance: counts and shows the distance done during the workout (data is displayed either in km or miles).

Pulse: shows the heart rate in beats per minute (BPM) from the heart rate monitor (HRM).

2. Fan:

The fan is accessible through a button on the console and includes 3 speed levels.

3. Heart Rate readings: through Contact and Chest Strap (telemetry)

The following options are available for both T516 and T514 Nautilus models: Contact Heart Rate (CHR) sensors on the handle bars and a Heart Rate Chest Strap Transmitter. The Console shows your Heart Rate in Beats Per Minute (BPM).

Chest Strap: has attached a heart rate transmitter so your hands are free during workout.

Important note about how to take care of the chest trap:

You must always remove the transmitter before cleaning the chest strap. Cleaning is done with mild soap plus water, and then thoroughly dry it. This must be done on a regular basis because sweat and moisture keep the transmitter active and drain the battery in the transmitter.

4. Workouts:

Quick Start (Manual Program) – 99.59 minutes duration

9 Profile Programs: 3 Challenge, 3 Intervals and 3 Hills

Calorie Goal

5K Course

10K Course

3 Custom User Programs

Heart Rate Controlled: Target HR, 65% Max, 75% Max, 85% Max

Body Max Index (BMI)

What does the BMI program do?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a valuable instrument that uses the ratio of height and weight to estimate the percentage of body fat and associated health risk. To use this program you must first establish your User Profile and enter the data requested. After you set your User selection, go to the BMI program and push ENTER/RESET. The program calculates your BMI value.

This table gives a general rating and BMI score:

BMI

Underweight – Below 18.5

Normal – 18.5 – 24.9

Overweight – 25.0 – 29.9

Obesity – 30.0 and above

Note from the manufacturer: The program may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. It may also underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.

5. User Setup (2 users)

6. Folding treadmill:

Same as T514 you can fold the treadmill manually with the aid of the hydraulic lift. The correct position to do this process is to bend your knees and keep your back straight.

7. Water bottle holder, magazine rack, transport wheels.

Conclusions

Nautilus T516 is a pretty large machine. Before deciding to order it, make sure you have space to store it in your home. For a safe operation, allow a workout area of minimum 201” x 71” (5.1m x 1.8m).

As stated at the beginning we had the chance to test also the T514 model and we noticed this treadmill has some additional parts and features than its predecessor. For example T516 has 2 Side Covers and 1 Rear End Cap.

You get more workouts which includes the BMI program. This is very useful for those interested in losing weight.

You get better incline, speed and a more powerful motor.

You also get a larger belt (although this implies you get a heavier and bigger machine). This is why you still must assembly the machine with a 2nd friend.

The advantage is the treadmill has wheels. So it’s easier to move around (although it’s not a piece of cake).

We like the heart rate readings (especially the chest strap). They are pretty accurate and very useful to monitor your heart beat during intensive workouts.

By the way, we are not doctors or specialists but we would like to make a recommendation for all those treadmill users out there. Consult a physician before you start an exercise program and stop exercising if you feel pain or tightness in your chest, become short of breath, or feel faint. One of our closest friends followed this recommendation when he felt some chest pains during his daily workout and that is why now he’s safe and sound, ready to continue training.

For a basic training machine Nautilus T516 is a good choice. Still we would like to point out a detail it doesn’t have which for some of you matters. This treadmill doesn’t have any entertainment features.

As a conclusion note we’ve had a very pleasant experience while testing this Nautilus Treadmill. It comes with all the workouts you need, no matter if you want to use this machine for fitness, weight loss, heart rate control or build resistance.
Nautilus Treadmills are created following a verified and well documented recipe. We wanted to test it ourselves so we have scheduled a series of Nautilus reviews which will be published on the blog in the next weeks.

First review is dedicated to Nautilus T514 Treadmill. This treadmill is a machine that you can find today at approximately $1100 USD (promoted with $750 less than its initial cost).

<!--

Note regarding how heart rate calculations are done on a treadmill:

Maximum heart rate of a person is regularly 220 BPM during childhood. Over years the values decreases reaching 160 BPM by age 60. The BPM is influenced mostly by stress, rather than age.

Endurance training influences the value of your BPM: while a typical adult may have a rest heart rate at 72 BPM highly trained runners may have 40 BPM or lower. The heart Rate Table is an estimated value of the Heart Rate Zone depending on individual characteristics and at what value the training enables fat burn and improves the cardiovascular system.

The procedure recommended for fat burning is to start slow and increase intensity until the heart rate reaches 60-85% of your maximum heart rate. To burn fat keep this pace for 20 minutes or longer. The graph available on this machine and on any other treadmill is just a recommended targeted heart rate value based on your age but to confirm your individual level, visit your physician.

4. Workouts:
Quick Start (Manual Program) – 99.59 minutes duration
6 Profile Programs: 2 Challenge, 2 Intervals and 2 Hills
Calorie Goal
5K Course
10K Course
2 Custom User Programs
Heart Rate Controlled: Target HR, 65% Max, 75% Max, 85% Max

5. User Setup (2 users):
This feature allows saving individual user data: age, height, weight, sex values that will remain in the console memory for future workouts.

6. Folding treadmill:
You can fold the treadmill manually with the aid of the hydraulic lift. Correct position to do this process is to bend your knees and keep your back straight.

7. Water bottle holder, magazine rack.

Conclusions

T514 is a heavy but solid treadmill. From the steel frame to the belt, every detail suggests that this machine is meant to resist high usage. But it’s heavy, so we recommend having a second friend at hand when it’s shipped in or when you want to move it around.

Dimensions are large, designed to support tall and heavy persons, so be sure you have the proper space for usage and storage when ready to order it.

Once you go over the shipping and assembling phases, you can plug in the cord and start using the machine. But the treadmill has security settings that must be met, like the power source so be sure you read the User Manual first.

Once it gets going, you’ll find intense pleasure in using this machine. The feature that may bring you the highest pleasure is that you can run a mile in 5 minutes, marathon speed. This is because the motor is powerful enough to allow you quick speed change and stable running surface.

What we like also is the variety of workouts, especially the Heart Rate programs. As you read above, using the Heart Rate programs correctly you have the highest chances to follow an efficient weight loss exercise routine.

The heart rate readings through the handle bars are not very accurate (most machines have the same fault) but Nautilus includes the Chest Strap which is pretty good. It is uncomfortable to use one chest strap for more than 1 person but either way, it’s an advantageous tool and recommended to be used while doing treadmill workouts.

The warranty is pretty weak. At first glance it made us raise some questions about the quality of this machine keeping count of such limited warranty values. The brand guarantees though for the quality of this treadmill. Putting in balance all these details, plus the price listed it all sums up to decent price/value equilibrium.

We also recommend buying a lubricant for good maintenance purpose.

And as a final note, the belt is powerful, long and well supported by the SoftTrack suspension to ensure proper joints protection.

As a conclusion we have high hopes for Nautilus products. T514 has raised our interest to test more treadmills from this manufacturer. We recommend it to anyone interested in having at home a powerful cardio training machine.
